Ditch the “All or Nothing” Mindset this Holiday Season

November 13, 2024 By strongfigure

When is the last time you set a big goal for yourself and accomplished it? Do you set goals but then get distracted or frustrated because you aren’t reaching them as quickly as you would like? And does your nutrition and fitness get pushed to the back burner with the other priorities in life-especially with the holidays soon approaching?

Today I sat down with a nutrition client for our monthly meeting and she said, “When I get off track with my habits, it’s so hard to get back on. Once I’ve screwed up, I feel like it’s easier to keep screwing up than to get back on track. I know that’s silly, but it’s just what happens.”

I totally connect with this. It’s the “all or nothing” mindset and I’m not sure why it’s so easy for us to fall into this trap, but it gets even the best of us. Just this past October, I struggled when my daughter broke her arm (doctor appointments took over our life), then my son got sick, I got sick, then she got sick…my birthday and Halloween were at the end of the month….it just got crazy and my schedule/life/everything seemed to change for a while. Did it derail me? A little bit. I won’t lie. But did it completely offset all my hard work? No way.

Because in order to change your life and accomplish your dreams, you must first change your thoughts. What’s the difference between people who crush their goals and those who don’t? We know our life moves towards the direction of our strongest thoughts.

If you are ready to stop thinking about your goals and start accomplishing them, it starts with creating a winning mindset.

So how do we do that? We learn exactly how to navigate the mindset that brings us down. And I’ve created a nutrition talk for you on exactly that:

Navigating The All Or Nothing Mindset: How To Stay Focused To Reach Your Goals. This talk discusses three steps to create a winning mindset so that you can start crushing your goals! Here are some highlights from the talk:

  1. Define what you want and WHY. Your why is your greatest motivation. Maybe it’s to lose 10 pounds. But WHY do you want to lose 10 pounds? Will you be happier? Will that improve your relationships? Typically, losing some weight or building some muscle, or even hitting a certain PR in the gym tends to boost a person’s confidence and a boosted self esteem can lead to better relationships and a total life transformation. So what’s your WHY and what about your life will change once you reach this goal?
  2. PLAN for SUCCESS. If you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail. Get the junk out of sight, out of mind. Put the fresh fruit on the counter and chopped and ready-to-go veggies in the fridge. Pre-portion snacks into snack bags so that they’re ready to go when you are. Pack extra meat sticks and protein shakes so you have snacks on the go. Pack your gym bag the night before. Be intentional about your relationships and hang out with people who have the same goals that you do. Set up your environment for success!!
  3. Set up daily reminders. Put alarms in your phone to drink water or eat balanced snacks. Put in your calendar your gym time. Mark your steps off at noon and see how far you’ve come. You’re making 2000-10,000 decisions a day so make the healthy choice the easy choice. Make decisions fail-proof. Have your food prepped and ready. Your protein shake in the fridge. Your gym bag packed. Your schedule blocked off for YOU time. Prioritize YOU.
  4. Bonus tip: Don’t forget to celebrate non-scale victories! When you’re on a journey, celebrating things like a PR in the gym, increased energy, better sleep at night, happier parenting – these are HUGE wins that come along with improved health.

So stay positive, talk to yourself the way you’d talk to a friend, set your sights on success and then set yourself up so that you cannot fail. For even more about ALL of this, check out the video I made right here!!
