Tis the season for family, festivities, and an abundance of delicious food. The temptations are all around us, and with parties and travel disrupting our daily routines, it can feel like it goes on for weeks.
So, how can you maintain your healthy habits when it seems like everyone is indulging?
We understand that maintaining a balanced diet can be a real challenge, especially during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.
In our nutrition talk, we will provide you with practical insights and solutions to tackle this issue head-on- such as my favorite go to’s:
- Set a realistic goal. Don’t go overboard on goals. The holidays are meant to be fun and relaxing. You deserve that time! But it’s ok to have some goals in place that will help keep you feeling like you’re still on track and not losing progress. My favorite things I do for myself and my clients is help set “non-negotiables.” Every big event or holiday season, I set a non-negotiable for myself. It’s usually “drink my water goal before alcohol” or even just “hit my water goal each day,” and I always try to get my steps in. So I might not worry about food or going to the gym, but if I hit my non negotiables, then I still feel successful.
- My next fave tip is to use the plate method at meals. The plate method is so simple. Fill half your plate with non starchy veggies, a quarter of your plate with protein, and a quarter of your plate with starchy veggies. A great example of this would be 1/2 a plate with green beans, brussel sprouts, broccoli….1/4 of your plate with turkey or ham or salmon…then 1/4 of your plate with starchy carbs like sweet potatoes. This really helps keep you feeling full and staying on track.
- Be mindful of your eating. Sit down, eat slowly, enjoy the company you’re with, and don’t lose track of what you’re eating because you’re paying attention to something else. Be mindful of how you feel and don’t eat until you’re stuffed!
- Prioritze taking some walks outdoors – sunlight and fresh air aren’t just great for you in general but taking a walk after a meal can seriously help your digestion and stabilize your blood sugar and insulin response to food. And not to mention bonding time with your family, kids, pets, and/or friends!!
