If you’ve ever followed anything of mine, you know I’m a protein fanatic. I believe that protein is the most important macro-nutrient we can put into our bodies and I’m never against trying new kinds! Just from previous posts I’ve written, you know I’ve tried probably thirty different brands of protein over the last few years. And when Sweat Pink of Fit Approach offered me the chance to review another protein product, of course without even thinking, I jumped on board.
Disclaimer: Yes, hemp is a species of Cannabis sativa. No, hemp is not the same as marijuana.
Without even thinking,
I said, YES! Give me some of that protein! And when it came in the mail, Erik asked me, “You’re going to drink that?! Do you have to take drug tests for work?”
Me: I was going to drink it yes, and yes we also are subject to drug testing.
Erik: I wouldn’t take it if I were you. Just to be safe.
Me: Humph.
I did a Google Search
and several sites said that I wouldn’t fail a drug test. A few sites said that I might and that scared me a little bit. Manitoba’s site says the following:
Hemp contains 0.001% Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and will NOT cause a psychoactive effect nor will our products cause a false positive drug test.
It looked like I was in the clear, but the “better safe than sorry” side of me still decided that two packs of protein (Chocolate and Vanilla) weren’t worth the risk. So I offered up the trial to my Strong Figure Athlete Ambassador, April.
Before we get to April’s review, let me give you some details about Hemp Protein from Manitoba Harvest.
HempPro 70 – It’s water soluble and has a smooth texture! It’s also our higher protein option (the Original flavour has 20 grams of protein per 30 gram serving). We love this protein in a post run smoothie or yoga shake (yes, you can literally shake it with your favourite beverage and you’re good to go). Comes in three delicious flavours; Chocolate, Vanilla and Original.
So why would you choose a hemp protein powder over a more traditional source? Personally, I would not. I am a fan of whey-based protein powders. But some people do not have this same option! Essentially, a plant-based protein powder may be great for you if you can’t handle dairy or other fillers typically found in whey-based powders–especially if you tend to feel bloated or gassy after consumption. Here’s a quick overview of what you’ll get with Hemp protein powders:
But what does it taste like?
Enter April’s review.
I tried the chocolate but didn’t read the freakin package and used waaaaaaaay too much water so it was gross. It was like cocoa powder in water.
I just had the vanilla with accurate amount of water and almost puked. It has no vanilla flavor at all. Bleh!!!! The color is green so that’s not appealing but for what it is, I didn’t mind. But the taste is something I couldn’t imagine ever drinking. I literally took one gulp and sat it down. Gross. However the texture was good, thin …not gritty or thick or anything bad there.
Unfortunately, April did not have a good experience with the taste of the product. Fortunately, if you’re still up for trying the product, the company has an entire page full of RECIPES and how to use the powders, including 40 smoothie recipes!
I read a few other blogs from writers who also tried the protein and they all reported making fruit smoothies with the protein and loving the results. Taste didn’t seem to be an issue even though some people reported the “green” vanilla to be a little weird. I kind of like that. I mean, shouldn’t we all be eating as clean as possible? Shouldn’t a plant-based protein be green? To me, that signals less artificial coloring and chemicals. So maybe that’s a WIN for Manitoba there.
